Harrow MP Allegations

Our Local MP, Tony McNulty, who is also Employment Minister, faces being scrutinised by the parliamentary standards, over claims that he has abused his government expenses allowance.
Tony McNulty, 50, is under scrutiny after claiming £60,000 of tax payer’s money for his second home that is approximately 10 miles away from Westminster. The house he is claiming for is in fact his parent’s home in Harrow, which is his constituency.

The standards commissioner John Lyons has launched a full investigation into Mr. McNulty’s expenditures. This could go on for months, meaning that it could potentially damage his political career.

Students Interveiwing Tony McnultyThe Employment Minister has been severely criticized, after claims that he spent £14,000 a year on his house in his constituency, Harrow. These funds are meant to help MP’s afford a second home, if they have to travel a long distance from their constituency to the Houses of Parliament. The minister insists that what he did was within Commons rules and that he uses his Harrow home on a regular basis.

When two Park High students stopped Mr McNulty, outside Television Centre on Sunday morning, he was actually pretty dismissive. When asked what the situation with his expenses were, brushed the question off by saying, “Oh, yeah, it was about additional cost allowances and how MPs from Outer London and the broader South East can have a home in the constituency, as well a one closer to London.” He ended by saying, “Maybe the system needs looking into and all that sort of thing.”

Tory MP Douglas Carswell last night spoke of his feelings on this new inquiry “MP’s are given an allowance to have a home in their constituency, not to subsidise family members.”

People in McNulty’s constituency of Harrow are also concerned about his expenses. Our Head of Year, Mrs. Becker, travels roughly 35-40 miles to get to Park High School, which takes a time consuming 1hour and is more than double the distance McNulty travels. Mrs. Becker said: “I work for the government, so I should have a second home allowance!”

We appreciate Mr McNulty saying that “Harrow should be proud” of our Park High School Reporters.
